DÍSA can be a part of you. “Sculpture” EP review

DÍSA is not actually an alien rebirth of Phil Collins but a young singer-songwriter located in Reykjavik, Iceland. With the recent release of her EP, Sculpture, DÍSA has created an eclectic mix of sounds truly resonating in pop hits from the late 1980’s and contemporary pop trance charts. The last thing anyone expects from a modern-day artist is Erasure and Toto’s lovechild dunked in Tiësto’s neon edits but in the case of DÍSA, apparently anything can happen.

There is something fun about this EP but that fun aspect is honestly difficult to identify. On a first listen, it sounded like any other music a Dan Deacon fan might have on their iPod. The lyrics are repetitive in ways that make the draining beats seem like bland noise. However, at some point halfway through the EP the beat picks up in a way that might be delirium but could also be credited to DÍSA and her musical knack for catchiness.

The EP is surprising and if that is all you are asking for, that’s all you’ll get. The songs start off soft and end up gritty and more rhythmic than was imaginable at the beginning. It seems unfortunate that such a talented person would be most talented at disguising an entire era of soft rock with electronic influences. The album is absolutely worth a listen and DÍSA gets all praise but do not expect any groundbreaking new tunes.
