Vagabon brings her musical portfolio to Toronto

Laetitia Tamko, better known as Vagabon, took over Toronto’s Velvet Underground for a one-night performance during her North American tour. The tour is in support of her recent album, Sorry I Haven’t Called, released this September.

Dramatic stage lighting filled the space spotlighting an abundance of synthesizers, guitars, drums, and a saxophone littered the rest. Following a soul-stirring performance by the opener, Baltimore’s Nourished by Time, Vagabon was quick to stage respecting her start time. Immediately met by cheers, her compact but mighty band of two (drums and sax/bass) stayed stationed at their instruments while she freely floated around singing and dancing.

Beginning the night with “You Know How”, Tamko promptly enticed her fans to sway and jump along throughout the set. Despite her petite appearance, Vagabon held center stage with a powerful presence, guitar firmly in hand. Tracks like “Cold Apartment” and “Passing Me By” were backed by her bassist and drummer, building upon powerful chords that carried the weight of her uncomplicated, yet raw, lyrics.

A talented instrumentalist and vocalist, she possessed a range that uncannily oscillated between electronic, punk, and emotional ballads. Having released an impressive run of three LPs since 2017, this Cameroon-born, New York-based musician truly let her falsetto loose for those in attendance, culminating in a set list of 14 songs.
