Let’s pay some attention to King Reign

September is always a busy month for music. As the festival season comes to an end bands, DJs, and solo acts begin to stack up lineups in small and large venues around town. One of those smaller acts, King Reign, performed a quick gig during the Scion Sessions Mixtape Series on September 4th at Toronto’s Tattoo.

Local weekly publications called out King Reign as “one to watch” this year and his debut full-length album, Sincere, without a doubt caught our attention just as much. Needless to say a live show was something to look forward to.

The evening promised a solid and lengthy line up on Thursday night. As one would expect, the room didn’t fill until the main act. These kids are clearly too cool to come out before 11pm, or stand close to the stage, but Reign didn’t appear to be fazed by a shy crowd.

Performing with none other than DJ Grouch, with whom we’ve become familiar during the last year’s Red Bull Thre3Style World Finals, the set was expertly mixed and expertly rhymed. Reign’s vocals are as sharp live as they are on record. Sincere is a lyrical, thematic album and that story came to life on stage especially during a freestyle.

So yes boys and girls, keep an eye on this one, this shit is live.
