DJ Vekked takes 5th DMC title in National Finals

Last week Toronto was home to the DMC Canada National Finals as a part of the Manifesto weekend.

East Coast and West Coast finals last month were a great indicator of what the night had to offer and it was quite clear there were favorites in the house. “Let’s be honest, you know who’s gonna win this one” seemed to be the attitude around the room. But the battle is a battle so the carefully selected finalists joined by a wildcard pick went to war in the heart of Steam Whistle Brewery.

As expected, the competitors were quite versatile mixing genres and tracks from across a couple decades worth of music references. But the real competition is about more than just the sheer entertainment value of the game – the root of it lies in skill and by the end of the night it was clear that on the skill level, some competitors stood a world apart.

To no surprise DMC defending champion Vekked placed first followed by DJ Jooze and !Kryme Won from Hamilton. This marks the 5th DMC title for Vekked and as we learned from his parents, who came out to show support. Jake has always been “a binge DJ” laughs his mother, “when he use to practice at home hours in a r0w we’d watch TV with earplugs and close captions.”

Vekked will now proceed to the DMC World Finals in London on October 4th for a 30-year DMC anniversary three-day celebration.
