Wild Ones EP: experience a little “Heatwave”

by Stacey Thompson

Since their 2010 formation, Wild Ones have devoted themselves to a do-it-yourself mentality. This process, of course, is longer and sometimes extremely time-consuming, but has yet to slow them down. Coming from a variety of different musical backgrounds, the Wild Ones pride themselves on having a democratic system — making sure every voice (and there are a lot of them*) is heard and respected throughout the creative process. This arrangement works well and allows for a rich and unique sound.

Their strong foundation was tested in 2012. Various members of the band came crashing into multiple road blocks that could have changed the face of everything they had been working towards. Guitarist Clayton Knap damaged one of his ear drums, and drummer Seve Sheldon kept band practice going while in the hospital with a punctured lung. But their collective perseverance, understanding, and upbeat attitudes allowed for the creation of their debut album Keep It Safe.

Jumping forward to today, over a year has passed and once again the Wild Ones brought their spunk to the studio. “Dim the Lights”, the second track off their latest EP Heatwave, is best described as simply fun. The synth-pop sounds set the tone for a summer party scene lit by bright city lights.

Dance percussion and the cool, smooth vocals on Heatwave etch into you a search for personal discovery and release from life’s responsibilities. The sensual vocals and jazzy riffs of “Show Me Islands” pull the listener away from the crazy nightlife and pressures of the world while creating a feeling of romance. It invites you to come away from it all — feel the hot summer breeze and warm ocean sand between the toes.

Wild Ones have really found a way to keep it light and breezy while evoking the feelings of youthful summer adventures, making Heatwave a great addition to any summer collection.

*Band members: Thomas Himes, Danielle Sullivan, Clayton Knapp, Nick Vicario, Seve Sheldon, Max Stein
