<p class="wp-block-paragraph">This heavy bass opening is what they were known for for many years. But somewhere between then and now, things changed. Thievery Corporation are no longer young men, and this room is not filled with young folk, which perhaps is why they no longer challenge human biology with eardrum-crushing bass right out of the gate. But that&#8217;s just my hypothesis.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">This tour marks the Thievery Corporation&#8217;s 30th anniversary. The performance began with a story of how Rob Garza and Eric Hilton met in 1995, and within a year, released their first album, <em><a href="https://open.spotify.com/album/3aQCZj9daJ9DAhUs7xirdN?si=8KDz2lOySjywz4BnkPO8xA">Sounds from the Thievery Hi-Fi</a></em>. Their fanbase spans decades with favourite songs from twenty-plus albums and many, many B-sides. Their songs set the mood in cultural staple films like <em>Garden State</em>, <em>Vanilla Sky</em>, and <em>Crazy Stupid Love</em>, to name a few. And yet if you ask a random person within your arm&#8217;s reach if they know the band, chances are they will shrug no.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-full"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1300" height="867" src="https://quipmag.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/03/DSCF9465.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-17355" srcset="https://quipmag.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/03/DSCF9465.jpg 1300w, https://quipmag.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/03/DSCF9465-300x200.jpg 300w, https://quipmag.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/03/DSCF9465-768x512.jpg 768w, https://quipmag.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/03/DSCF9465-400x267.jpg 400w, https://quipmag.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/03/DSCF9465-800x534.jpg 800w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1300px) 100vw, 1300px" /></figure>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-full"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1300" height="867" src="https://quipmag.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/03/DSCF9338.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-17347" srcset="https://quipmag.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/03/DSCF9338.jpg 1300w, https://quipmag.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/03/DSCF9338-300x200.jpg 300w, https://quipmag.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/03/DSCF9338-768x512.jpg 768w, https://quipmag.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/03/DSCF9338-400x267.jpg 400w, https://quipmag.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/03/DSCF9338-800x534.jpg 800w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1300px) 100vw, 1300px" /></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">&#8220;<a href="https://open.spotify.com/track/0KVNBXWdsyZs5dicoOTUyq?si=ac01e46f4fcf4825">Lebanese Blonde</a>&#8221; from <em><a href="https://open.spotify.com/album/5ZWFTOIoEcaqzLJBnQIXLc?si=-TYZhE4yTauG3jdytTHWNg">The Mirror Conspiracy</a></em> is perhaps the song that has earned them the biggest group of new fans (surely because of Garden State). Every record is unique in its own way, and today&#8217;s merch table had pieces from across decades. T-shirts, posters, and vinyl with imagery from <em><a href="https://open.spotify.com/album/2gKBPcQcRfqbnjjnv3Qi8a?si=dXAq5DtcQZam6DB8hoCFzw">The Richest Man in Babylon</a></em>, <em><a href="https://open.spotify.com/album/7qbX1vENQusKKXpRTSVNwa?si=XAlyzbv_QwmtonBlJMUJYA">Babylon Rewind</a></em>, <em><a href="https://open.spotify.com/album/4ux2pMVfSHkUshnEsEPjxk?si=H2Z46eW6RtiaO1zKXi_iEA">Saudade</a></em> – take your pick. The line for the merch table remained in a constant loop until the end of the show. </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">My introduction to Thievery Corporation <span style="box-sizing: border-box; margin: 0px; padding: 0px;">was<a href="https://open.spotify.com/album/4Mm9m1oRyTwFxiMiSbk8Ks?si=ufFP4GapSKWSjS7xEDQQFg" target="_blank"><em> The</em></a></span><em><a href="https://open.spotify.com/album/4Mm9m1oRyTwFxiMiSbk8Ks?si=ufFP4GapSKWSjS7xEDQQFg"> Cosmic Gate</a></em> tour. It is that opening performance that had me briefly squat on the floor, gathering my loose brain cells in complete surprise, that turned me into a Thievery fan.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The duo always work with a group of talented musicians. Tonight on stage they were joined by Mr. Lif, Laura Vall, Frank Orrall, and Puma Ptah. A full array of musical instruments was also present, building the layers of sound, including Eric Hilton&#8217;s sitar. </p>

<figure class="wp-block-gallery has-nested-images columns-default is-cropped wp-block-gallery-2 is-layout-flex wp-block-gallery-is-layout-flex">

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="900" height="1350" data-id="17349" src="https://quipmag.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/03/DSCF8535.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-17349" srcset="https://quipmag.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/03/DSCF8535.jpg 900w, https://quipmag.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/03/DSCF8535-200x300.jpg 200w, https://quipmag.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/03/DSCF8535-768x1152.jpg 768w, https://quipmag.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/03/DSCF8535-400x600.jpg 400w, https://quipmag.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/03/DSCF8535-800x1200.jpg 800w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 900px) 100vw, 900px" /></figure>
</figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The band has always been very public about their left-wing political beliefs, supporting human rights and food programs. Their music is very reflective of their stance, often as a complete album concept – <em><a href="https://open.spotify.com/album/5J42c2vWzK8k8oNKWFbtwo?si=VvgQ5QVvQFmvmbto4XRTcw">Culture of Fear</a></em>, <em><a href="https://open.spotify.com/album/76np4yKlvMrv7Zkj6qDW0x?si=3N_zR2jCRDivXDxQKfZd5A">Radio Retaliation</a></em>. Today, Laura Vall made a point to address the immigration inequalities, &#8220;we are made to feel like we don&#8217;t belong, but the truth is, we all belong. Oh, and by the way – Fuck ICE,&#8221; she paused to say. </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">During this very interactive, nearly two-hour performance, the band played through their favourite songs across decades, interructing with the crowd and one another. For a handful of songs, the entire band set in a circle at the front of the stage, committed to an acoustic performance. The show suddenly got more intimate, more directed to the fans.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Thirty years in the making, it seems Thievery Corporation are not about to stop, and today&#8217;s plus-ones are surely going to be adding a song or five to their music library collection. I am sure we will meet again, so – until then. </p>

<p>With a slight delay, the band stepped out on stage with an instrumental track, a sample of what&#8217;s to come, a showcase of the on-stage talent, and the vivid variety of sound and skill, in line with how they&#8217;ve done it in the past. Everyone&#8217;s phone was in the air, streaming, snapchatting, instagraming, and recording to be rewatched later. The band has been around for over two decades and has over 10 records records behind their belt so it was no surprise that the audience was a more mature crowd, dancing, swaying singing along to almost every song. My soul, at this moment, feels at home here.</p>

<p>For nearly two hours different singers rotated through the stage while the band played out nearly every track from their most recent release, <em>The Temple of I &amp; I</em>. Lou Lou Ghelichkhani stepped out on stage for &#8220;<a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ei6buAer6kc" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Time + Space</a>,&#8221; Natalia Clavier for &#8220;<a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r8_RmxaF-gA" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Love Has No Heart</a>,&#8221; Mr. Lif for &#8220;<a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hl9dRan5oXE" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Fight to Survive</a>,&#8221; Notch for &#8220;<a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YOiUKwMx1sc" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">True Sons of Zion</a>&#8221; and the most recent addition to the band, Racquel Jones, for &#8220;<a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KahPH6oc12I" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Letter to The Editor</a>.&#8221; And so the rotation continued in no particular order for the next hour. Ghelichkhani and Halligan joined Mr. Lif on stage for the performance of &#8220;<a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=89dRfb3dCiM" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Ghetto Matrix</a>,&#8221; one of the most engaging performances of the night. The older tracks were sprinkled throughout, teasingly treating the audience to the highlights of their musical past with &#8220;<a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gvlNy8CdlIY" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Until the Morning</a>&#8221; from <em>The Richest Man in Babylon</em>, &#8220;<a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YvRsn-5SqSA" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Take My Soul</a>&#8221; from <em>Culture of Fear</em> performed by Lou Lou Ghelichkhani as it was written back in 2011, and many other classics.</p>

<p>The front of the venue was hot and sweaty with enthusiastic dancers, the balconies were spilling over with observers, while people in the back enjoyed the show in their own distant peace, sipping on cold beers, and having their own dance parties. &#8220;Best show ever!!&#8221; I overhear someone announced, hastily clapping behind me as the show was wrapping up. That it was, definitely one of the best ones.</p>
