Geoffroy’s new LP “Good Boy” gets groovy

As the summer solstice fast approaches and the beach party/rooftop club/yacht rave seasons get into full swing we are always looking for new music that we can blast into the clear warm summer skies. Answering that call on June 14th, Montreal-based singer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist Geoffroy dropped Good Boy.

His fourth studio album comes 10 years after his time on the French Canadian version of The Voice/La Voix. The album was announced with the release of the first of three singles, “C.A.Y.A.” (an abbreviation for Come As You Are). This track features a driving beat with a funky breakdown for a chorus while lively guitar riffs dance through the track.

The second single, “Hotel Bed,” is a captivating storytelling song meant to entertain and inspire dancing with catchy riffs and an easily singable chorus. The third and final single, “Early Morning Sun,” dropped the day before the album and included a music video starring Papi, the dog that partially inspired the album and is featured on its cover.

Speaking on his final single Geoffroy shared: “Early Morning Sun is probably my favorite song on the album. It feels to me like it holds its essence; something on a brighter and lighter note (for the most part). The story behind ‘Early Morning Sun” stems from a trip I took to Mexico City in April 2022, where I stumbled upon and fell for a shelter dog that I decided to adopt and bring back home with me, all in a matter of a few days. Since then, Papi has become much more than just a dog to me— all you pet owners will know what I mean. This entire story inspired the lyrics to Early Morning Sun and ultimately influenced the whole album’s theme and ecosystem.”

Geoffroy hit the nail on the head saying the story of Papi has its fingerprints all over the album. An international story of love, risk, and companionship is what this album is all about. Musical influences from all over the world and music videos filmed in at least 3 different countries put this album squarely all over the globe.

Synthesizing those sounds together with his unique style creates a sound somewhere between Woodkid and Khruangbin putting Geoffroy into a genre I can only think to call psychedelic dance music. “Hotel Bed,” “First Impression,” and “Recuerdo de Ti” feature the international themes most acutely. “Recuerdo de Ti” begins with a choir singing in Spanish before their voices begin to loop and their singing becomes part of the beat before being replaced entirely by a procession of flutes.

Geoffroy brings it all back home again with “Mac n Cheese,” a classic folk song by just a boy and his guitar. Geoffrey worked with longtime producing partners Clément Leduc and Gabriel Gagnon to help achieve the sounds he wanted on this album and the chemistry between this team seems to be firing on all cylinders as all the tracks are expertly produced and beautifully layered with a myriad of instruments making an appearance.

This album is a perfect summer vibe album. You can pick your favorite tracks and toss them into a playlist or play this thing all the way through while sipping a cervesa on the beach. It’s warm and uplifting and easy to sing along to.

Geoffroy begins a Canadian tour starting July 1st and will make his lone US stop at Brooklyn’s own Elsewhere on October 23rd. I’ll be there and I hope you will be too. Good Boy is available to stream everywhere, scroll for the complete tour dates list below.
