Machinedrum brings his latest record “3FOR82” to life in Toronto

Machinedrum’s (aka Travis Stewart) latest record release, 3FOR82 takes a departure from his earlier work. Combining a range of songs that include drum & bass, hip-hop, jazz, R&B, and juke this record is a musical adventure. The stories are often told through collaborative voices KUČKA, DUCKWRTH, AKTHESAVIOR, Ezri, Tanerélle, Deniro Farrar, Topaz Jones, deem spencer, aja monet, ROZET, Will Johnson, Ian Maciak and Tinashe. The question Travis posed to all of them is an inquiry into self: “If you could visit with your younger self, what would you say to them?”. In more than one way the outcome is vocalist-centric, genre-blending, collective introspective for all parties involved.

The live show features some brand new AV work, which is always great to see, but the most interesting part about this live set is the inclusion of a drummer – yes, this is a drum & bass show with a live drummer, Ian Maciak. Velvet Underground (Toronto) does not have the best setup for live instruments but in this context, with these two artists, the music came to life in a very cool manner.

Performed live 3FOR82 is an adventure. From lyrically heavy rap tracks (“RESPEK”) to fast-paced drum & bass songs (“HON3Y,” “U_WANT”) and the melodic stories in between (“HEAL,” “KILL_U”) there was something for everyone. Later in the set Travis even dipped into his older portfolio with “Gunshotta” from the 2013 Vapour City.

The Toronto show was the second time this record was performed live in the world, Travis shared with the room. Having watched, and enjoyed this set, end to end if the tour were to loop back around we would be back in the room in a heartbeat. Go see it. Listen. Dance. Enjoy.
