The last time Joyce Manor headlined Toronto was back in 2022. Some fans were lucky enough to have seen them open for Weezer in 2023, but still patiently waiting for them to headline again, me included. But on the afternoon of their original Toronto date, March 26th, the band made a post stating there was illness within the band, and the following day, lead singer Barry Johnson confirmed he had woken up sick and that there was a tear in his vocal cords. Had he sung any longer, that tear would have led to permanent scarring.

One month and a Coachella performance later, April 24th rolls around – and fans go nuts before the first note even plays for their set. Sporting an “I <3 Toronto” t-shirt, Barry, along with his bandmates, were all smiles at the fan’s warm reception. The Californian punk-rockers delivered a high-energy performance that was reflected in the audience, and vice versa, bringing the vibe of an intimate basement party to the Danforth Music Hall. This show was worth the wait, and the band shared immense gratitude as the night went on.

The I Used To Go To This Bar tour is in support of their latest album release of the same name, released earlier this year on January 30th. In true Joyce Manor fashion, the album is short but easily revisitable with emotional highs and lows, all through the lens of an adult faced with cruel realities, while taking a glimpse of your past, present and possible future. I Used To Go To This Bar is the natural evolution of Joyce Manor’s career, tying in the short, fast and loud tunes they’re famous for with slightly new sounds that shine through in “The Opossum,” “All My Friends Are So Depressed,” and my personal favourite, “Well, Don’t It Seem Like You’ve Been Here Before?”.

Openers Combat, Teen Mortgage and Militarie Gun owned the stage, bringing headliner energy for their respective slots. Combat are well on their way to carry the torch for Midwest emo sounds, while Teen Mortgage and Militarie Gun have already solidified themselves in the rock and alt-rock scenes and continue to do so on this tour.

2026 is the for sure year to catch Joyce Manor on tour, not just as headliners, but they’ll be opening for Hot Mulligan in June and the All-American Rejects in May and August. They are now hopping on all four stops for this year’s Vans Warped Tour before heading to the UK and Europe to headline again.

Last but certainly not least, Chicago duo Finom are perfect for the indie/alternative fan. They, along with everyone else on the lineup, are so cool, and I am in awe of their talents.

Wavelength has proven to be a quintessential piece in Toronto’s extensive music scene and making music easily accessible for show goers of all ages. Events like these are so important and are needed to keep our ever-growing music scene alive for years to come. Having an event like this in such an open space is also so nice, as those passing through can stop and listen as they walk through. Seeing the audience slowly grow as the evening went on and them being so attentive, captivated by all the performers, not to mention seeing other artists in the audience supporting their friends – it warms the heart.

Here’s to many years of Wavelength! I wonder who will be on the lineup next year…

“Toronto” she greeted the room. “I love this city”

The best way I can describe 070 Shake’s set is by comparing it to being on multiple rollercoasters. There was a lot of build-up, tons of sound barrier-breaking screams during the beginning of her set with lots of dancing and moshing throughout the night. But by “Black Dress,” the fans were off the ride. It felt like 070 Shake was practically begging the audience to sing along. Even though I didn’t know all the words, I was giving energy back to her. But when “Guilty Conscience” began to play fans were back on the ride, screaming along as they once were before.

“Tonight I’ll be playing a mixture of all three of my albums because I see them as one thing and you guys have been able to see my growth and experience through them, they’re all me [equaly], not multiple versions all me”.

“Thank you, guys, for following me into this movement. We are making music,” she acknowledged the band behind the veil, allowing them all to have a spotlight at one point or another during the show.

Some lucky fans got to be on stage with the rapper, getting the chance to show off a tattoo honouring her album Modus Vivendi and another got to request a song and sing “The Pines” alongside 070 Shake. But some highs have some incredible lows as the young man was encouraged by 070 Shake to stage dive back into the crowd and landed poorly, hurting himself and another audience member. I hope they’re both okay. Stay safe out there!

The combination of RnB and alternative sounds blended perfectly. She certainly found a new fan in here tonight. What I loved the most about her performance, however, was how much fun she was having on stage. The energy she brought out was unmatched, and it was also nice seeing her go from incredibly tough during certain songs to very soft when speaking to the audience. Except for one moment when she exclaimed “f— pop music!” Some days I can agree with that statement.
